Cinephile! The days continue to be tough but we carry on. Unlike some vaccines these days, Big Fred Tuesday is not canceled this week and returns with interviews with Christian Schwochow, director of the provocative Berlinale Gala feature Je Suis Karl. This wraps up my Berlinale 2021 coverage.
I also had a chat with Julio Maria Martino, director of Country of Hotels from the Manchester Film Festival, a surrealist tale about lost souls, who all spend time in an odd hotel room. And I spoke with filmmaker Kemal Yildirim, who is also fond of realist filmmaking and has just launched a fundraising campaign for his new project, The Haunting of the Lady-Jane.
This is a special episode of the Big Fred Tuesday because it marks the launch of a new segment, which I called Dictionary of Film but may rename “Cinephile Dictionary.” For the first installment of the segment, I chose to talk about “Alan Smithee.” And for my Popcorn Classics, a surprising pick: The Blues Brothers by John Landis from 1980.
